Married in Makara - Part One
This year we moved our ever-popular-in-Wellington pop-up weddings to the very cool grounds of the Makara Community Hall & historic Chapel, a super cute rural settlement situated a mere 10 minutes from Karori.
It proved so popular in fact, that we ended up holding NINE weddings across the weekend. Are we crazy? Yes! Was it amazing and fun? Absolutely!
Part one of this epic weekend sees us with a moody, but mostly dry day, spent with five gorgeous and unique couples. Back for her fifth day with us was one of our favourite celebrants ever - Miranda Zander. We love Miranda’s passion for love, and for weddings, and we always know we’re going to have the best time ever with her at our side.
We also finally snagged the amazing and talented Billie Brook - we’d been trying to work together for a while now but being amazing and talented, she’s also super popular. Billie exceeded all expectations and we knew from the moment that we met that we were going to love working with her.
For our florals this year, we wanted someone with the naturally loose and wild style that we love so much. A deep search on Instagram lead us to Holly at Abaca (see mum, sometimes going down the internet rabbit hole is productive!) Holly was everything we were looking for and more! How this rad gal flew under our radar is beyond us but we’re thrilled to have her as our official florist for all our pop-up weddings in Wellington going forward. You can imagine what a big task it is to create wedding florals for nine weddings in one weekend - but Holly was just totally cool and excited about it. The sea of flowers we received was like nothing we’ve seen before.
And of course, it’s not a party without cake. We’ve been working with Sweet Bakery in Karori for years now, and under the new guidance of Pauline, they were as yummy as ever!
So much kudos needs to go out to our team - it’s hard work being on your feet for 12+ hours a day (and then doing it again the next day! Hey Elysia & Blair, we love you!) but all our vendors and helpers were simply amazing and we couldn’t have done it without ya’ll!
See for yourself below - and take a gander at part two over here, where we switched things up with some other awesome vendors.
Bianca & Corey
If you follow us on Instagram, you’ll probably recognise these two for their gorgeous smiles. They were just radiating love and happiness - and a little cheekiness too.
Jess & Gary
When people think “wedding” there’s a very specific aesthetic that tends to come to mind, but the truth is, there are no rules and a wedding can be whatever you want it to be. So when Jess & Gary came into our lives, not wanting a bar of tradition, AND A GOTH BOUQUET - we’ll, we were absolutely living for it! Jess’s dress (complete with pockets!), and Gary’s waistcoat, were custom made by the extraordinary Zowie Dee.
J&G had this to day about their day:
We need to say an enormous thank you to you all - it was an incredible experience, everything was SO EASY and went so smoothly - you had everything down to such a fine art and it was wonderful how you rolled with our wee quirks (can we bring a step, we have an assistance dog etc).
It was easy and fun and genuinely felt like us, which was really special. I loved that you thought of everything, even coming down to the car to shoo everyone inside so they wouldn't see us until we hit the aisle - that was perfect.
Gary is a tourism trainer so he assesses companies and customer service constantly for work, and he said the whole process was so easy and he can't think of anything you could have improved (and he's picky!).
Everything was thrilled to bits and gave us amazing feedback.
You also made amazing choices with the vendors - the cake was gorgeous (vegan and GF AND delicious?!), my bouquet had endless compliments and Miranda was incredible. She absolutely nailed the ceremony, people thought she was a friend of ours and couldn't believe we'd never spoken to her. It was lovely and funny and just right for us.
And Billie was incredible at getting everyone organised and making everyone feel comfortable, she was a total pro and really lovely. I'm amazed to have so many photos to look at so soon, which was wonderful as we could show Gary's parents before they flew home today.
Brielle & Steven
Yup, that’s how cool Brielle was, just casually rolling up in a bright red Ferrari, perfectly coordinated with her heels too! While we didnt hold any weddings inside the hall itself, the stunning red velvet curtain made for beautiful photography backdrop.
Fiona & James
This wedding was so much more than a public declaration of love, but also the official coming together of a blended family, with James’s son playing a very important role in their ceremony, as he does in their lives. These guys were the first to book in at the new venue, patiently waiting for us to release the perfect spot - it really does seem to have a wonderfully universal appeal.
Briar & Dan
Pop-up weddings are perfect for cool cats like Briar & Dan, who want a nice ceremony with fam and friends, but without too much fuss and limelight. We keep things simple with a quick ceremony so they could enjoy more celebration.
And that’s just the Saturday! Check out Sunday, when the sun decided to make an appearance meaning we could utilise the grounds more too.
xx Team Skinny
P.S. After raving about how great it all was - we’re back again in January 2020. Saturday has already sold out but we go hard, so there are a few spots available on Sunday again :)
